About this activity

How can movement be captured in photography? Or, on the other hand, how can you freeze the action of a scene? Managing the exposure time – or the shutter speed – of the camera is the answer to these two questions and is, just like the depth of field, a key parameter in photography.

Slow speed shoot

About your Mentor
Born in Brazil and now based in Helsinki, Finland, photographer Ricardo Santos has been developing hybrid photography for the past few years; shooting with film, developing and scanning the negatives for digital editing.

The first contact with photography came at a very early age, in 1984, when his dad taught him how to look through the view glass of a Rolleiflex. It wasn’t until Ricardo’s first son was born, that he made the decision of getting a new DSLR camera to record the family memories. After that photography became a serious hobby and it didn’t take long until he decided to explore film photography and the analog world.

SHUTTER SPEED AND MOVEMENT (BEGINNER LEVEL)
Managing the exposure time – or the shutter speed – of the camera is the answer to these two questions and is, just like the depth of field, a key parameter in photography.

This parameter allows the light to hit the digital sensor for a defined amount of time, which will freeze or blur a movement.

In this case, you will have once again a wide array of creative possibilities: blur or freeze the action, get a filé (a moving subject is frozen in a blurry surrounding).

This workshop will teach you how to:

- Use the “S” and “Tv” shooting modes

- Make filés of moving subjects

- Freeze the movement of a subject

- Use blur to suggest movement and bring dynamism to your pictures
