About this activity

A photographer is bound to be able to “read” light and, from that reading, make his or her esthetic choices for the final image. Understanding light is thus is a prerequisite to express creativity, just as depth of field and shutter speed are.

Light and focus

About your Mentor
Born in Brazil and now based in Helsinki, Finland, photographer Ricardo Santos has been developing hybrid photography for the past few years; shooting with film, developing and scanning the negatives for digital editing.

The first contact with photography came at a very early age, in 1984, when his dad taught him how to look through the view glass of a Rolleiflex. It wasn’t until Ricardo’s first son was born, that he made the decision of getting a new DSLR camera to record the family memories. After that photography became a serious hobby and it didn’t take long until he decided to explore film photography and the analog world.

LIGHT AND FOCUS (BEGINNER LEVEL)
A photographer is bound to be able to “read” light and, from that reading, make his or her esthetic choices for the final image. Understanding light is necessary to express creativity, just like depth of field and shutter speed.

Several metering modes are available on modern digital cameras (matrix, spot or centre-weighted metering) and this workshop will demonstrate the pros and cons of each of them, as well as provide you with practical considerations.

Focusing is intimately linked with light metering in the sense that it functions using the same channels on the camera (the small square or rectangle zones that are visible in the viewer). Focus and light metering need to be mastered and are crucial in order to avoid out-of-focus and badly exposed (too light/too dark) photographs.

This workshop will teach you how to:

- Measure light using the various modes of your camera (spot, centre-weighted or matrix)

- Make photos in backlight conditions

- Have an effective focus range using the viewer's various channels

- Develop a sense of composition from the shooting
